ELEVEN SIX WOMEN | HANNAH COHEN
Photography by Josh Goleman | @joshgoleman
Hannah Cohen is a singer-songwriter shaped by a lineage of poets, drummers, and makers, but it was her move to the Catskills in 2018 that transformed her artistic world. Daily hikes with her rescue dog, Jan, and the quiet patience of the mountains taught her to listen deeply—“to stay quiet until the noise starts to make sense.” Earthstar Mountain, her first album in five years, gathers the blurred, shimmering memories of 2020–2024 into a luminous keepsake of place, loss, community, and renewal. Built among a vibrant creative circle and crafted in Flying Cloud, the studio she shares with partner Sam Evian, the record reflects the cycles she observes in the woods: grief and regeneration, stillness and movement, the beauty and ache of change. It is, ultimately, a love letter—to the mountains, to her people, and to the interconnectedness of all things.
We spent a beautiful morning with Hannah at Assembly in Kingston, photographing her in her most natural, effortless musician mode while she wore her favorite looks from the ELEVEN SIX Holiday collection.

Can you share about your background and what led you to be a professional musician?
I think that my family history had a lot of influence on me becoming an artist . My mother's father was a poet and my father is a jazz drummer. This paved a clear path to become a singer-songwriter. Music + poetry = song

You describe the Earthstar Mountain album as a "keepsake" of your years in the Catskills. What moments or memories from 2020–2024 felt essential to preserve in song?
The songs came to me over the course of those years while I built a recording studio with my partner Sam Evian, here in the Catskills. We had an incredibly busy time with the studio, hosting bands while they recorded at the studio, and most months we would have people recording at our studio 3 out of the 4 weeks of the month. It was always a revolving door of guests and it was difficult to make time for our own music projects. At first I was frustrated that I had to piece together small chunks of time to work on my record but that time allowed me to keep writing and marinating on songs that needed more work. The songs came through observing these mountains: witnessing patterns in nature, the rot and repeat of time and things within myself that returned every year.
A huge marker during this time was the death of a very close friend of mine. In the darkest corners of my grief I was able to write the song "Mountain". In a way it preserves him in time and helped me understand the sadness. The song became a place I could reach him when I needed.
We love this quote from your ABOUT page: "Cohen has learned the patience of her environment; to stay quiet until the noise starts to make sense." Can you speak to this meaning?
In a way this is referring to my writing process which can sometimes feel more like a stream of consciousness. It's a practice in letting the truths and melody find their way to the surface.

How has living so close to your family, your partner Sam Evian, and your creative community influenced the emotional world of the Earthstar Mountain album?
My community keeps me creating—whether it's music, art, or cooking. We're all makers, and watching them push through the grueling parts of the creative process is hugely encouraging. Having artists nearby to bounce half-formed ideas off of is invaluable. Honestly, having that kind of support isn't just essential for being an artist; it's essential for being a person.
We love your opening track, 'Dusty,' with its lush orchestration and emotional vulnerability. What did you hope to set in motion by choosing this song to open the record?
'Dusty' seemed to me a great way to start the record as lays down a dynamic sonic landscape. There's a magestic and dreamy feel to it and I wanted the listener to land there first before taking on the rest of the album.
When you're not writing and playing music what are your favorite ways to unwind and reset for new waves of creativity?
I love hiking in our back woods with my dog. We live close to state land so we find old logging trails and hike for miles deep in the forest. It's wild to imagine people hundreds of years ago using the same trails. I also love foraging for mushrooms with my close friend and neighbor, Misha. She can identify almost anything in the forest which is such a great resource and I am always learning so much from her!

Is there a series, movie, or book that you've recently fallen in love with?
I just watched a documentary about Hand Made Films. George Harrison's film production company. Harrison went outside of his wheelhouse as a songwriter and musician to start producing and distributing high-risk, artist driven projects that major studios rejected. It is a great reminder to continue to support overlooked artists that don't have a chance in the commercial world, to take chances and push the edges of your boundaries as an artist.
If you could hop on a plane tomorrow for pure pleasure, not work, where would you go and why?
Somewhere very quiet and tropical! After this past year or touring constantly, I'm feeling like I need to reset somewhere sunny and fruity ;)
What does the ELEVEN SIX brand mean to you? Which pieces from The Holiday collection speak to you the most, and why?
For me it ELEVEN SIX is everyday luxury while at the same time, something that I can wear daily here in the Catskills. The Daria camel/black cardigan has been so versatile in my wardrobe! I can dress it up or down and I love layering a vest on top. But to be honest every single piece from the Fall/Holiday collections I would wear if I could! The silhouettes are extremely flattering and chic!
